Mick Herron’s Slough House – A Glossary

Find even more on the slow horses and the Slough House series here.

There is a lot going on in Mick Herron’s Slough House books and following the tradition of John le Carré he’s created his own spy jargon. As the series continues I thought having a cheat sheet might prove helpful for refreshing memories as we return to the series after a break between books.

Also, as the series has progressed, I’ve become more and more fascinated by the structure of Herron’s fictional MI5. At the very bottom of the glossary, I’ve included a potential organizational chart based on hints that Herron has dropped throughout the series.

Please know that I’ve tried to shy away from too many spoilers but given the way Slough House goes through agents, there’s a certain amount that will slip through. If you haven’t read all of the books, proceed with caution. I’ve made major spoilers hidden. Highlight the white space before the parentheses to see them.

Catch up on all the latest news on the upcoming Apple TV series – SLOW HORSES here.

Read reviews of each of the Slough House books, an interview with Mick Herron and more I’ve written on the Slough House series here.

The term or person’s first book appearance will be in parentheses.

This is great. I have started the first in this series twice, gave up. I’ll save this glossary and try again. Thanks.

    1. I think it’s worth another attempt. Once the book gets going, the reversals and surprises are a lot of fun. And the later books are even better.

This is great. I wish I’d seen it before I started London Rules last week.
Can I make a list of all the other book series I enjoy so you could do the same for them? I’d consider it a personal favor & I could offer a sincere “Thank you” in return for making my literary obsessions easier to track. 😁

Ah yes. That’s right. Thanks for reminding me.

Just started The Drop today. No Jackson Lamb though, I gather which is a shame.

    Enjoy your weekend, Jeff

This is helpful and will be saving it for the future. Ws it exlained how and why JK Coe killed someone? I read about him at Slough House and then went back to an earlier when he was introduced to the books. He was not yet a solitary person. Did I miss something ?

    1. Have you read Nobody Walks? It’s not an official Slough House book but Coe appears in it. It explains what happened to him and why he’s so traumatized.

      1. sue3harls

I’ll revisit that. Do you find his writing witty and choppy? I lose track a bit. I’m reading “Why We Die” now. That’s one reason why I like Quiller — one person to keep track of. I also have face blindness, like Dr. Oliver Sacks.

    1. Thanks! Actually Judd’s first appearance is in Slow Horses. The reporter goes to meet with him about the kidnapping plot. You’re right of course that he plays a much larger role in Real Tigers.

  8. Brendan

Thanks very much for this Jeff. Very helpful! Can you tell me what happened to Judd’s enforcer Seb – referred to in Slough House

  9. Miona

    Hello!
Rade Serbedzija told me in an interview that he is also pat of the cast. He will be in 4 episodes and all his scenes are with Gary Oldman. He plays a double agent, if I understood correctly (I’m not familiar with Mick Herron’s books).

  10. Alan

If memory serves, River Cartwright didn’t screw up. He was pretty much set up by a rival. IMHO he really doesn’t belong in Slough House.

  11. Tony

Actually, several of the other Slow Horses don’t really deserve to be there – they just became scapegoats for, or impediments to, other people’s schemes. Such as Catherine Standish, JK Coe and Lech Wicinski. Roddy Ho’s blinkered association with Kim might have ‘qualified’ him had he not already been there because nobody liked him!

  12. Just started reading Slow Horse. I will certainly bookmark this page as a helpful guide as I progress. But I have a quibble:

Is the First Desk really the head of *all* of MI-5? What happened to the Director General?

    1. Herron has been pretty upfront that his MI5 is not based in reality. It’s a bit more like a mix of MI5 and MI6, plus whatever works for his story.

  13. Iain

“Across the River” is MI 6, where Claude Whelan comes from, not analysts from MI 5. This the the building made famous by the later James Bond movies, located at 85 Albert Embankment, on the south side of the Thames.

  14. Leann

I found the Slough House books after watching the Slow Horses show. Obviously, I then had to obsessively seek mor info. Thank you for the pics and glossary. (And the podcast).

  15. Patricia How

This is sooo helpful, thank you! Got hooked on reading the series after hearing Mick Herron last year at a literary festival and then met him when he signed my copy of BA.
